Funding will provide modern, accessible recreation play space for children
SUNDRIDGE — The Ontario government is investing $200,000 through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) to help the Village of Sundridge replace playground equipment at Lion’s Park. As part of the government’s plan to protect Ontario and build stronger northern communities, this funding will bring new and accessible play structures that create a fun and safe space where families can stay active, healthy and play.
“Playgrounds are where some of our fondest memories are made during childhood,” said George Pirie, Minister of Northern Economic Development and Growth. “This investment will help strengthen the community of Sundridge by creating a modern, safe and inclusive space where children and their families can gather to play, socialize, learn and grow.”
The Village of Sundridge is using NOHFC funding to purchase and install new playground equipment designed to provide a safe, accessible environment for children of all ages and abilities. The updated play area will feature innovative structures that promote physical activity, creativity and social interaction. It will become an inclusive community destination that encourages healthy lifestyles and supports outdoor recreation.
“Lions Park is located in the heart of our community on the shores of lake Bernard. It is a wonderful gathering place for our residents and anyone who visits to enjoy,” said Mayor Shawn Jackson. “Now, with the help of the recent NOHFC funding we have received from our provincial partners, we will be making it even better with an all-new arrangement of play structure equipment”.
By enhancing public spaces that support active, healthy living, this project helps make Sundridge an even more welcoming place for people to live and work.
“Our government continues to invest in infrastructure that makes our communities better,” said Graydon Smith, MPP for Parry Sound-Muskoka. “This new playground equipment will help enhance the waterfront park for local families and visitors to Bernard Lake. The NOHFC has invested in many of our local communities to upgrade their playgrounds over the past year and I’m thankful that this project in Sundridge is one of them.”
The Ontario government is prioritizing investments through the NOHFC that protect northern industries and jobs, mitigate the impacts of U.S. tariffs and trade disruptions and secure new opportunities for the long-term prosperity of Northern Ontario. The renewed focus is boosting competitiveness and ensuring the North remains a leader in Ontario’s economy. This new direction is in addition to the province’s investment of an additional $30 million over three years, bringing the NOHFC’s annual budget to a total of $110 million. Together, these initiatives will benefit communities of all sizes, both rural and urban, including Indigenous communities.
