Ontario Upgrading the Val Rita-Harty Community Centre

VAL RITA-HARTY — The Ontario government is investing more than $200,000 through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) for the Township of Val Rita-Harty to make necessary upgrades to the community centre’s boiler system. This investment supports the government’s plan to protect Ontario by helping northern communities upgrade and revitalize local facilities that help strengthen the local economy, protect jobs and provide a safe space for residents to stay healthy and active.

“Our government is proud to support projects such as this because it is important for communities to have a space to come together,” said George Pirie, Minister of Northern Economic Development and Growth. “By investing in important community spaces – such as Val Rita-Harty’s community centre – our government is ensuring that communities have the resources needed to contribute to the health and well-being of their residents.”

Serving as a central hub for residents, the Township of Val Rita-Harty received $201,628 through the NOHFC to install a new boiler system in its community centre. The hub houses recreational facilities, event spaces and a public library for community members and visitors. This project will modernize the facility helping to reduce operational and maintenance expenses, while providing a safe and accessible facility for residents and visitors to enjoy.

“This upgrade means more than heating and air conditioning—it brings comfort and health. We care about our community’s well-being and so does the NOHFC. For example, our weavers will craft beautiful handmade pieces in a comfortable space while sharing stories and skills. It’s not just fabric—it’s connection, culture and craftwork woven together,” said Johanne Baril, Mayor of Val Rita-Harty. “This upgrade is a meaningful investment in the heart of our community, thanks to the NOHFC.”

Announced in June 2025, the Ontario government is refocusing the NOHFC to prioritize investments that protect northern industries and jobs, mitigate the impacts of U.S. tariffs and trade disruptions and secure new opportunities for the long-term prosperity of Northern Ontario. The renewed focus is driving prosperity, boosting competitiveness, securing new opportunities and ensuring the North remains a leader in Ontario’s economy. This new direction is in addition to the province’s recently announced investment of an additional $30 million over the next three years, bringing the NOHFC’s annual budget to a total of $110 million. Together, these initiatives will benefit communities of all sizes, both rural and urban, including Indigenous communities.
