Ontario Upgrading the Pointe au Baril Community Rink

POINTE AU BARIL — The Ontario government is helping the Township of The Archipelago make necessary upgrades to the Point au Baril Complex (PABPlex) Community Rink. As part of the government’s plan to protect Ontario, this $198,000 investment will repair and enhance an important municipal asset in Pointe au Baril, strengthening the local economy, protecting jobs and promoting active, healthy living.

“Our government’s support for refurbishments to the PABPlex Community Rink will ensure residents and visitors can use and enjoy this facility for years to come,” said George Pirie, Minister of Northern Economic Development and Growth. “During these uncertain economic times due to U.S. tariffs, we are committed to supporting our communities, improving public infrastructure and building opportunities across Northern Ontario.”

The Township of The Archipelago is receiving $198,000 through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) to renovate the outdoor PABPlex Community Rink to bring the facility back into use and prepare it for a potential roof structure in the future, positioning the facility for long-term usage. Project activities include engineering and design, servicing the site to bring in water and electricity, repairing the footings and anchor bolts, resurfacing the concrete slab and installing new rink boards, glass and netting.

“This project has been years in the making, driven by the dedication of the Pointe au Baril Raise the Roof community group and the ongoing efforts of township staff,” said Bert Liverance, Reeve, Township of The Archipelago. “With support from the NOHFC, we are proud to see this facility upgraded to provide a space that can be enjoyed year-round. It is a valuable addition to our community – one that will support recreation, connection and wellness in every season.”

“Investing in community recreation is a priority for our government,” said Graydon Smith, MPP for Parry Sound–Muskoka. “Upgrading the rink here in Pointe au Baril ensures the community has a safe, accessible space to enjoy outdoor activities. I applaud the local group that recognized the importance of this project and thank the NOHFC for supporting it through the Community Enhancement Program.”

Announced in June 2025, the Ontario government is refocusing the NOHFC to prioritize investments that protect northern industries and jobs, mitigate the impacts of U.S. tariffs and trade disruptions and secure new opportunities for the long-term prosperity of Northern Ontario. The renewed focus is boosting competitiveness, securing new opportunities and ensuring the North remains a leader in Ontario’s economy. This new direction is in addition to the province’s recently announced investment of an additional $30 million over the next three years, bringing the NOHFC’s annual budget to a total of $110 million. Together, these initiatives will benefit communities of all sizes, both rural and urban, including Indigenous communities.
