Ontario Upgrading Local Community Centre in White River

Investment will ensure the community centre can continue providing a space for residents to stay healthy and active and host sporting events that boost tourism

WHITE RIVER — The Ontario government is investing $568,875 to help the Township of White River replace the roof of its community centre. This investment supports the government’s plan to protect Ontario by helping communities revitalize local facilities, grow the economy and promote active, healthy living.

“Congratulations to the mayor, council, municipal staff and everyone involved in making this roof replacement project a reality for the residents of the Township of White River,” said Bill Rosenberg, MPP for Algoma—Manitoulin. “Thanks to the support of the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation, these improvements to the White River Community Centre will enable all residents and visitors to continue having safe and enjoyable experiences for many years forward in this important community hub. This investment is a great example of how our provincial support working with community initiatives can make a meaningful difference.”

“Our government is proud to support this important community asset so it can continue to be an accessible sports and events hub for the community that residents and visitors alike can enjoy,” said George Pirie, Minister of Northern Economic Development and Growth. “NOHFC funding for important community infrastructure like this is one more way we’re protecting Ontario by strengthening our communities and building a more resilient and self-reliant economy.”

The Township of White River will use the funding provided through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) to replace the existing three roofs of the Community Centre, which are deteriorating rapidly. The repairs will help ensure the integrity of the building and extend its life span. Once complete, the upgrades will allow the community to continue hosting sporting events and tournaments, which will bring even more economic benefits to the area.

“On behalf of our community, I am very pleased to accept this new NOHFC funding for our community centre improvements,” said Tara Hart, Mayor of White River. “This is a fantastic beginning to MPP Rosenberg’s new term and our working relationship, as well as a positive step forward for our community. The community centre is a much needed and valued part of our northern lifestyle and services people of all ages.”

Announced in June 2025, the Ontario government is refocusing the NOHFC to prioritize investments that protect northern industries and jobs, mitigate the impacts of U.S. tariffs and trade disruptions and secure new opportunities for the long-term prosperity of Northern Ontario. The renewed focus is driving prosperity, boosting competitiveness, securing new opportunities and ensuring the North remains a leader in Ontario’s economy. This new direction is in addition to the province’s recently announced investment of an additional $30 million over the next three years, bringing the NOHFC’s annual budget to a total of $110 million. Together, these initiatives will benefit communities of all sizes, both rural and urban, including Indigenous communities.
