GREENSTONE – The Ontario government is providing more than $3.1 million through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) for four Greenstone community enhancement projects. This investment supports important infrastructure upgrades and boosts business and recreational development in Northwestern Ontario.

“Our government is committed to revitalizing community infrastructure here in Greenstone and across the North,” said Greg Rickford, Minister of Northern Development. “We are focused on keeping our northern communities relevant and current, making them attractive places to live, work, play and do business.”

The NOHFC is funding the following projects:

• $2 million for the Municipality of Greenstone to upgrade its wastewater system and extend this service south of Little Longlac Bridge for commercial and industrial development along the Highway 11 corridor
• $633,600 for the Municipality of Greenstone to rehabilitate Longlac Sportsplex, a facility with an ice rink and four curling sheets
• $500,000 for the Municipality of Greenstone to refurbish the pier and boat launch at Polar Lodge Park
• $16,445 for the Kenogamisis Recreation Corporation to revamp the Kenogamisis Golf Club’s public golf course and clubhouse in Geraldton.

The NOHFC promotes economic prosperity across Northern Ontario by providing financial assistance to projects—big and small, rural and urban—that stimulate growth, job creation and skills development. Since June 2018, the NOHFC has invested more than $608 million in 5,070 projects in Northern Ontario, leveraging more than $1.93 billion in investment and creating or sustaining over 8,100 jobs.

• In 2021, the Ontario government launched new and improved NOHFC programs that support more projects in rural northern communities and make it easier for more people and businesses to apply. The programs target existing and emerging markets, provide more work opportunities for Indigenous people and address the skilled labour shortage in the North.
