NIPIGON & RED ROCK — The Ontario government is investing $592,987 through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) to help the Townships of Nipigon and Red Rock renovate two community recreation centres. As part of its plan to protect Ontario, the government is making targeted investments to build stronger, healthier and more accessible northern communities that help locals stay active and connected.

“Strong communities in northwestern Ontario depend on modern spaces where people can gather year-round,” said George Pirie, Minister of Northern Economic Development and Growth. “These investments supporting upgrades to recreation centres in Nipigon and Red Rock will bring people together and ensure residents of all ages can engage in fitness, sports and community events.”

The Township of Nipigon is receiving $365,357 in NOHFC funding for renovations that will enhance the Nipigon Community Centre’s infrastructure and long-term sustainability. The revamp will improve overall functionality and accessibility of the facility through upgrades to the hot water boiler system, electrical infrastructure, pool building, entrances, arena lighting and acoustics. The project will also increase the capacity of the facility through the conversion of an existing storage room into a change room.

“On behalf of the Township of Nipigon, I would like to thank the NOHFC for this incredible investment in our recreation facilities, which are essential to the health and happiness of our citizens and those of our neighbouring communities,” said Suzanne Kukko, Mayor, Township of Nipigon. “This extensive project includes upgrades to our community centre’s boiler system, and the purchase of new exterior doors – both critical to the continued successful operation of the building. As well, our hockey community has been advocating for a dedicated girls changeroom for over a decade. We are very pleased that through this project, it will finally become a reality – making our arena even more welcoming and accessible to all. Our outdoor pool will also get some much-needed improvements, including new toilets and exterior siding for the buildings. We are very grateful to the NOHFC for their assistance and excited to be moving forward with this project.”

The Township of Red Rock is using $199,237 in NOHFC funding to replace the Red Rock Recreation Centre roof. The new roof will help ensure the recreational facility remains safe and reliable while continuing to serve the community through hockey, skating, bowling and fitness programs.

“On behalf of Red Rock, I want to express our sincere thanks to the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation for this important investment in our community centre,” said Darquise Robinson, Mayor, Township of Red Rock. “The building is at the heart of so many local events, programs and gatherings, and maintaining a safe, reliable roof ensures we can continue welcoming residents of all ages throughout the year. This support helps us protect a vital space for connection, recreation and community pride, and we are truly grateful for the province’s ongoing commitment to small northern communities.”

The Ontario government is prioritizing investments through the NOHFC that protect northern industries and jobs, mitigate the impacts of U.S. tariffs and trade disruptions and secure new opportunities for the long-term prosperity of northern Ontario. The renewed focus is boosting competitiveness and ensuring the north remains a leader in Ontario’s economy. This new direction is in addition to the province’s investment of an additional $30 million over three years, bringing the NOHFC’s annual budget to a total of $110 million. Together, these initiatives will benefit communities of all sizes, both rural and urban, including Indigenous communities.
