ESPANOLA — The Ontario government is investing $397,453 through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) to upgrade two community sports facilities in Espanola, enhancing opportunities for recreation and local use. As part of its plan to protect Ontario, the province is making strategic investments to help northern municipalities build and revitalize local infrastructure to build strong, healthy and accessible communities.

“Vibrant communities in northern Ontario are sustained by modern spaces that serve residents and visitors throughout the year,” said George Pirie, Minister of Northern Economic Development and Growth. “Our government is pleased to support the revitalization of these facilities in Espanola, helping people connect through sport, exercise and fun.”

Espanola Ski Club Inc., operating as Boogie Mountain, is receiving $199,410 in NOHFC funding to further develop as an all-season recreation destination and expand its activities. Enhancements include an archery area, a disc golf course and trails for cross‑country skiing and mountain biking for all skill levels. Once complete, the project will promote increased local engagement and boost tourism.

“The NOHFC Boogie Diversification Project grant will open the property to be a 12-month-a year recreational facility, supplying outdoor affordable recreation to people of all ages,” said Tom Hutchinson, General Manager of Boogie Mountain. “Having leagues, programing and tournaments will bring tourists from the surrounding area to Espanola. This grant will create jobs and will be one more reason for people to enjoy the beautiful outdoors.”

Espanola Curling Club is receiving $198,043 in NOHFC funding to replace the ice plant at its facility. The new system will significantly upgrade club operations by extending its facility’s lifespan and improving energy efficiency, which will reduce operating costs and enhance sustainability.

“I am thrilled about our collaboration with NOHFC which will allow us to complete significant updates to our ice plant,” said Alan Emiry, President of the Espanola Curling Club. “This project will impact an entire generation, ensuring the ECC remains operational for many years to come, equipped with problem-free, energy-efficient and modern technology.”

“Congratulations to the Espanola Ski Hill on receiving NOHFC funding for the Boogie Diversification Project, and to the Espanola Curling Club on securing support for a new ice plant,” said Bill Rosenberg, Member of Provincial Parliament for Algoma-Manitoulin. “These investments are a testament to the hard work and dedication of local volunteers and organizers. Together, these projects will enhance year-round recreation, strengthen community spaces and support active, healthy lifestyles for residents of all ages in Espanola. Well done to everyone involved.”

The Ontario government is prioritizing investments through the NOHFC that protect northern industries and jobs, mitigate the impacts of U.S. tariffs and trade disruptions and secure new opportunities for the long-term prosperity of northern Ontario. The renewed focus is boosting competitiveness and ensuring the north remains a leader in Ontario’s economy. This new direction is in addition to the province’s investment of an additional $30 million over three years, bringing the NOHFC’s annual budget to a total of $110 million. Together, these initiatives will benefit communities of all sizes, both rural and urban, including Indigenous communities.
