MANITOUWADGE — The Ontario government is investing $2,093,750 through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) to help the Township of Manitouwadge renovate its recreation centre and construct a new pavilion at the community park. This investment is part of the province’s plan to protect Ontario by building stronger, more resilient communities and improving local infrastructure across northern Ontario.

“Community spaces play a vital role in bringing families and friends together by offering welcoming environments where residents and visitors can stay active, come together and enjoy themselves,” said George Pirie, Minister of Northern Economic Development and Growth. “Through these investments, our government is modernizing public spaces in Manitouwadge to meet the needs of the community now and into the future.”

The Township of Manitouwadge is receiving $2 million in NOHFC funding for various upgrades to its recreation centre. The project includes accessibility improvements, installation of an LED scoreboard, updates to the heating and electrical systems, replacement of the roof and updated exterior painting and signage. The renovations will contribute to the health and vibrancy of the community, enhance tourism and expand recreation opportunities by reducing operating costs and extending seasonal programming.

The township is also receiving $93,750 in NOHFC funding to support the construction of a pavilion to cover the outdoor stage in Prospector Park, a waterfront park located downtown. The pavilion will expand opportunities for community use by enabling year-round, weather-protected events and boosting local economic activity.

“The Township of Manitouwadge is grateful for the support provided through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation for improvements to our recreation centre and the construction of a new waterfront pavilion,” said Trish Boileau, Director of Community Services for the Township of Manitouwadge. “These investments will enhance recreational opportunities, strengthen community gathering spaces, support local events and tourism and help ensure these important community assets continue to serve residents for years to come. As a remote northern town, funding programs like NOHFC are essential to advancing projects that strengthen our community and support economic development. We sincerely appreciate NOHFC’s investment in Manitouwadge.”

“Congratulations to the Township of Manitouwadge on receiving an NOHFC grant for extensive repairs and improvements to the recreation centre and to build a pavilion at the waterfront stage,” said Bill Rosenberg, MPP for Algoma – Manitoulin. “These important upgrades to the recreation centre infrastructure and the installation of an LED scoreboard will enhance the overall experience for everyone who uses the facility. The pavilion will enhance the waterfront with a welcoming shelter. Well done to everyone involved!”

The Ontario government is prioritizing investments through the NOHFC that protect northern industries and jobs, mitigate the impacts of U.S. tariffs and trade disruptions and secure new opportunities for the long-term prosperity of northern Ontario. The renewed focus is boosting competitiveness and ensuring the North remains a leader in Ontario’s economy. This new direction is in addition to the province’s investment of an additional $30 million over three years, bringing the NOHFC’s annual budget to a total of $110 million. Together, these initiatives will benefit communities of all sizes, both rural and urban, including Indigenous communities.
