TIMMINS — The Ontario government is investing $1,474,125 through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) to support three City of Timmins tourism and recreation projects. As part of the government’s plan to protect Ontario, the province is making strategic investments to help northern municipalities build and revitalize community infrastructure to boost local tourism and provide residents and visitors with safe, welcoming spaces to enjoy.

“Our government is proud to support essential improvements to municipal infrastructure across northern Ontario,” said George Pirie, Minister of Northern Economic Development and Growth. “Revitalizing community assets in Timmins will help ensure residents and visitors have ongoing access to recreational and sporting facilities while also setting up the city for continued economic growth through tourism development.”

The NOHFC is providing funding to the City of Timmins for the following projects:

  • $663,119 to restore and expand the Mattagami Boat Launch, the only municipal boat launch providing access to the Mattagami River.
  • $601,006 to renovate four municipal arenas: the Archie Dillon Sportsplex Arena, McIntyre Community Centre Arena, Mountjoy Arena and Whitney Arena.
  • $210,000 to transform Porcupine Melview Park into Porcupine Commons, a modern park with an accessible pathway and parking lot, new play structures and a sensory garden.

“The Ontario government’s investment through the NOHFC is helping to strengthen recreation opportunities across our community,” said Michelle Boileau, Mayor of Timmins. “From upgrades at the Mattagami Boat Launch to the transformation of Porcupine Melview Park, we are investing in spaces where residents can gather and connect. We thank the province for its continued partnership in supporting the long-term vitality of Timmins.”

The Ontario government is prioritizing investments through the NOHFC that protect northern industries and jobs, mitigate the impacts of U.S. tariffs and trade disruptions and secure new opportunities for the long-term prosperity of northern Ontario. The renewed focus is boosting competitiveness and ensuring the North remains a leader in Ontario’s economy. This new direction is in addition to the province’s investment of an additional $30 million over three years, bringing the NOHFC’s annual budget to a total of $110 million. Together, these initiatives will benefit communities of all sizes, both rural and urban, including Indigenous communities.
