Ontario Investing $323,000 to Upgrade the Royal Canadian Legion in Thunder Bay

Funding will ensure Legion continues to be a gathering place in the community for generations to come

October 16, 2025

THUNDER BAY — The Ontario government is investing $323,900 through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) to repair the roof of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 129. As part of the government’s plan to protect Ontario, this funding is building a stronger, healthier and self-reliant community by enabling residents and visitors to gather and connect in an accessible and welcoming facility.

“Our government is proud to support this important community asset so it can continue to be an accessible gathering place for members and visitors alike to enjoy,” said George Pirie, Minister of Northern Economic Development and Growth. “NOHFC investments like this one support inclusive spaces that foster growth, connection and well-being for northerners.”

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 129, also known as the Slovak Legion, is receiving the NOHFC investment to remove the existing roof, install a new, more durable roofing system and metal capping. The project will ensure the lifespan of the multi-use facility is extended, so the Legion can continue to welcome members, veterans and thousands of patrons who attend the numerous annual events, contributing to Thunder Bay’s healthy and vibrant community.

“I would like to thank the Ontario government and the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) for the funding we received to replace our roof with a brand-new roofing system,” said Larry DeCoppi, President of the Royal Canadian Slovak Legion Branch 129. “A special thank you to the Honourable Kevin Holland, MPP for Thunder Bay–Atikokan, for his continued support in helping us secure this grant through the outstanding programs offered by the NOHFC. Investments like this make it possible for the Slovak Legion to continue serving our veterans, their families and our community for many years to come.”

“The Royal Canadian Legion has always played an important role in supporting our veterans and serving as a gathering place for the community,” said Kevin Holland, Member of Provincial Parliament for Thunder Bay–Atikokan. “This investment will ensure Branch 129 remains a safe, accessible and welcoming facility for years to come, so that veterans, their families and community members can continue to gather, connect and celebrate together.”

Announced in June 2025, the Ontario government is refocusing the NOHFC to prioritize investments that protect northern industries and jobs, mitigate the impacts of U.S. tariffs and trade disruptions and secure new opportunities for the long-term prosperity of Northern Ontario. The renewed focus is boosting competitiveness and ensuring the North remains a leader in Ontario’s economy. This new direction is in addition to the province’s recently announced investment of an additional $30 million over the next three years, bringing the NOHFC’s annual budget to a total of $110 million. Together, these initiatives will benefit communities of all sizes, both rural and urban, including Indigenous communities.
