SCHREIBER — The Ontario government is investing $200,000 through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) to help the Township of Schreiber modernize its municipal playground at Mallory’s Blue Park. The funding will add new inclusive recreational infrastructure for residents and visitors alike. As part of the government’s plan to protect Ontario, the province is making strategic investments to help northern communities build and refresh infrastructure to strengthen local tourism opportunities and provide safe, accessible outdoor spaces for all to enjoy.
“Our government is pleased to support local projects that enhance opportunities for recreation in Schreiber, and across northwestern Ontario,” said George Pirie, Minister of Northern Economic Development and Growth. “Revitalizing the playground structure at Mallory’s Blue Park will provide families and visitors with an inclusive outdoor space that will enhance recreational opportunities, support local businesses and ensure it can be enjoyed for years to come.”
The Township of Schreiber is using NOHFC funding to renew its municipal playground, located at Mallory’s Blue Park, by replacing the old infrastructure with new playground equipment that is fully accessible and barrier-free, creating an improved and welcoming area to gather in the community.
“We are absolutely thrilled that the NOHFC has invested $200,000 for Schreiber to install a new playground at Mallory’s Park,” said Kevin Mullins, Mayor of the Township of Schreiber. “Adding a new accessible playground to our community will be a contributing factor in Schreiber’s goal of providing accessible facilities that promote mental and physical health for our community’s children. Mallory’s Park is a symbol of our community’s strength and togetherness, providing years of enjoyment and memories for countless numbers of families and visitors. We are very thankful to the NOHFC for investing in this playground and in Schreiber’s future, ensuring it will continue to provide memories for many years to come.”
The park is located just off Highway 17, near the Trans-Canada Highway and local food vendors, making it an ideal spot for tourists and local families to gather. This project will encourage more travelers to stop and increase foot traffic in the area, resulting in economic benefits to local businesses and the community.
“It is an honour to join the community at Mallory’s Blue Park to celebrate the grand opening of this new accessible playground equipment, dedicated to Mallory,” said Bill Rosenberg, MPP for Algoma-Manitoulin. “This park is a special gathering place for families, and I want to congratulate everyone whose vision and hard work made this project a reality. I also want to recognize the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation for its support in making these new accessible features possible and ensuring the park remains a welcoming place where people of all ages and abilities can come and enjoy the North.”
The Ontario government is prioritizing investments through the NOHFC that protect northern industries and jobs, mitigate the impacts of U.S. tariffs and trade disruptions and secure new opportunities for the long-term prosperity of northern Ontario. The renewed focus is boosting competitiveness and ensuring the North remains a leader in Ontario’s economy. This new direction is in addition to the province’s investment of an additional $30 million over three years, bringing the NOHFC’s annual budget to a total of $110 million. Together, these initiatives will benefit communities of all sizes, both rural and urban, including Indigenous communities.
