SUDBURY – The Ontario government is providing more than $3.2 million through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) for 121 job placement opportunities in Sudbury–Nickel Belt. This investment will help businesses expand operations and develop Northern Ontario’s workforce.
“Our government is helping businesses harness local talent in Sudbury–Nickel Belt, with targeted investments that create more opportinuties for northerners to gain essential skills and build meaningful careers,” said Greg Rickford, Minister of Northern Development. “Together with our northern partners, we are creating highly skilled, good-paying jobs that will boost economic growth and prosperity in the North.”
Internship projects receiving NOHFC funding include:
- $35,000 to the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek to hire an Economic Development Intern to improve the community’s access to grant funding and planning and expanding programming that enhance economic independance
- $35,000 to the Northern Ontario School of Medicine to hire a Bioremediation Research Assistant to help study genetically modified microbes for nuclear waste management
- $35,000 to Cinefest; The Sudbury Film Festival Inc. to hire a Marketing Partnership Development Officer Intern to develop and implement a subscriber-based membership incentive program
- $26,163 to Northern Wildflowers Inc. to hire a Agricultural Business Development Intern to assist with seed farming, crop planning and agricultural research projects
- $22,126 to Laporte Veterinary Medicine Professional Corporation to hire a Veterinary Intern to assist with providing animal care and client communications
The Ontario government is supporting local internships through the NOHFC’s People and Talent Program. The program supports a wide variety of internships, including skilled trades, and addresses the unique needs of other in-demand jobs. Program candidates include new entrants into the workforce, those transitioning to a new career, the unemployed and underemployed.
“We are removing barriers to participation so more businesses can provide on-the-job career development, address skilled labour shortages and create more opportunities for a broader range of interns, including more opportunities for Indigenous youth,” said Minister Rickford.
The NOHFC promotes economic prosperity across Northern Ontario by providing financial assistance to projects—big and small, rural and urban—that stimulate growth, job creation and skills development. Since June 2018, the NOHFC has invested more than $613 million in 5,214 projects in Northern Ontario, leveraging more than $1.94 billion in investment and creating or sustaining over 8,240 jobs.
