A Legacy at a Crossroads
For over a century, Wabi Iron & Steel Corp. has been a cornerstone of northern Ontario’s industrial economy. Based in New Liskeard, Wabi supplies critical material handling systems and durable castings to the mining and industrial sectors; industries that underpin the region’s prosperity.
But in recent years, the company found itself at a crossroads. Increasing global competition, particularly from lower-cost overseas producers, was putting pressure on its operations. To remain competitive and continue supporting its workforce and community, Wabi needed to modernize.
When Opportunity Outpaced Capacity
As demand for advanced, high-quality industrial components grew, Wabi began facing capacity constraints. Despite strong relationships with customers and clear opportunities for growth, the company was forced to turn down new work due to limitations in its existing equipment and facilities.
Without strategic investment, Wabi risked losing market share, and jobs, at a time when northern Ontario’s manufacturing sector needed stability and innovation.
From Strain to Strategy
- Early Warning Signs: Aging equipment limited efficiency and productivity, making it increasingly difficult for Wabi to compete on cost and quality in a global market.
- Pressure to Diversify: Expanding into new industries, such as mineral processing, forestry, and aggregate crushing, required enhanced capabilities and broader product offerings that current systems couldn’t support.
- A Defining Financial Hurdle: Past restructuring and persistent liquidity challenges made it difficult for the company to independently finance the large-scale upgrades needed to remain viable and grow.
Despite these obstacles, Wabi’s leadership remained committed to transformation, but they needed a partner to help bring their vision to life.
Fueling Modernization Through Partnership
With support from the northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) through the Invest North Program – Grow, Wabi launched a major modernization initiative.
The project received $400,000 in NOHFC funding, supporting a broader $704,650 investment in:
- Facility upgrades and capital construction
- New manufacturing equipment including welding equipment, CNC machines, testing equipment, and crane and lifting devices, and other equipment to modernize operations
- Information and communications technology improvements to improve IT data management.
This investment enabled Wabi to modernize its operations, enhance efficiency, and expand its production capabilities, all while maintaining its strong presence in northern Ontario.
Stronger, Smarter, and Ready to Compete
The impact was immediate and meaningful:
- 17 new full-time jobs created, strengthening local employment
- Existing jobs retained, ensuring continued economic stability in the region
- Expanded product offerings, allowing Wabi to enter new markets and serve a broader range of industries
- Improved manufacturing processes, increasing productivity and competitiveness
By the project’s completion in 2023, Wabi had not only stabilized its operations, it had successfully positioned itself for long-term growth. The company emerged stronger, more efficient, and better equipped to compete in a global marketplace.
