Provincial funding will boost community well-being and tourism
RAINY RIVER — The Ontario government is investing $288,000 through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) to support two recreation projects in the Rainy River region. As part of its plan to protect Ontario, the province is making targeted investments to help improve local infrastructure that fosters strong, resilient, connected and vibrant northern communities.
“Our government is pleased to support the improvement of these important recreational assets so they can continue to enhance quality-of-life and contribute to the local tourism economy,” said George Pirie, Minister of Northern Economic Development and Growth. “These investments demonstrate the broad and impactful role the NOHFC continues to play here in the Rainy River region and across northern Ontario.”
The Borderland Racing Association is receiving $108,000 towards the redevelopment of the Emo Speedway. Improvements include washroom renovations, modernization of canteen equipment, purchase of picnic tables and other site amenities, and fencing, lighting, electrical and sound system upgrades.
“Borderland Racing Association would like to thank MPP Greg Rickford and the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation for their generous support of Emo Speedway,” said Tammy Strachan, President of the Borderland Racing Association. “This funding will allow us to make much-needed upgrades to our facility, including improvements to our electrical system, fencing, sound system, canteen and other infrastructure. These investments will improve safety and the overall experience for our drivers, volunteers, fans and families, while helping ensure Emo Speedway continues to be a strong community attraction for years to come.”
Royal Canadian Legion Major Hughes Branch 54 is receiving $180,000 to renovate its facility’s kitchen, bathroom and social area to make it more efficient and accessible. The expanded space will provide an appropriate venue for Legion activities, community gatherings and more.
“On behalf of the Executive Committee and members of the Royal Canadian Legion, Major Hughes Branch #54, I would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the Honourable Greg Rickford MPP, the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), and the Rainy River Future Development Corporation (RRFDC) for their generous support and providing us with the opportunity to complete much needed renovations and upgrades to our kitchen and club room washrooms,” said Heather Pilcher, First Vice President of the Rainy River Legion. “These improvements will enhance our facility and help us continue providing a welcoming and accessible space for our members and the broader community for years to come.
“For generations, the Emo Speedway and the Royal Canadian Legion, Major Hughes Branch 54 have been places where people come together, build connections and celebrate the strength of our communities,” said Greg Rickford, MPP for Kenora-Rainy River. “We’re proud to support these community assets with critical upgrades and modernization, ensuring both can continue to serve veterans, residents and visitors. Through the NOHFC, we’re investing in the places that bring people together and build stronger, more vibrant communities across Northwestern Ontario.”
The Ontario government is prioritizing investments through the NOHFC that protect northern industries and jobs, mitigate the impacts of U.S. tariffs and trade disruptions and secure new opportunities for the long-term prosperity of northern Ontario. The renewed focus is boosting competitiveness and ensuring the North remains a leader in Ontario’s economy. This new direction is in addition to the province’s increased investment, bringing the NOHFC’s annual budget to a total of $110 million. Together, these initiatives will benefit communities of all sizes, both rural and urban, including Indigenous communities.
