Funding will support historic local recreation centre

TIMMINS — The Ontario government is investing $68,615 through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) to enable the McIntyre Curling Club to install a commercial-grade dehumidifier system and two gas heaters. This funding delivers on the province’s plan to protect Ontario through strategic investments in important local infrastructure, helping communities connect and lead healthier, more active lives.

“Spaces for sport and recreation are essential to build a stronger and more connected northern communities,” said George Pirie, Minister of Northern Economic Development and Growth. “Our government is proud to support the historic McIntyre Curling Club in upgrading its facility, furthering its role as a curling destination for locals and visitors from across the province.”

The McIntyre Curling Club operates the McIntyre Arena, where it hosts bonspiels, the Canadian Championship, clinics and various special events including the U18 National Curling Championships this past February. Through its activities, the club makes curling accessible to the community, while contributing to local economic vitality. With the NOHFC’s support, the organization will undertake important infrastructure upgrades to help increase operating efficiency and exemplify its role as a key social and recreational venue.

“On behalf of the McIntyre Curling Club, I would like to sincerely thank the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation and Minister George Pirie for their generous support in funding 50 per cent of the cost of our new dehumidifier,” said Stephen Meunier, President of the McIntyre Curling Club. “This investment will help us improve our facility, enhance the experience for our members and visitors and ensure the long-term sustainability of our club. We are truly grateful for this partnership and the commitment to supporting community recreation in Timmins and northern Ontario.”

The Ontario government is prioritizing investments through the NOHFC that protect northern industries and jobs, mitigate the impacts of U.S. tariffs and trade disruptions and secure new opportunities for the long-term prosperity of northern Ontario. The renewed focus is boosting competitiveness and ensuring the North remains a leader in Ontario’s economy. This new direction is in addition to the province’s investment of an additional $30 million over three years, bringing the NOHFC’s annual budget to a total of $110 million. Together, these initiatives will benefit communities of all sizes, both rural and urban, including Indigenous communities.

• The McIntyre Arena (commonly known as “The Mac”) is a historic building, having been in operation since 1938. The Arena has hosted many tournaments and championships, including the U18 National Curling Championships in February 2026.
