The Ontario government is launching new and improved Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) programs that respond to the unique needs of Northern Ontario. This will make it easier for more people and businesses to apply for funding, support more projects in smaller rural communities, and target both existing and emerging industry sectors.
Launching on February 11, 2021, and replacing all previous NOHFC programs are four new programs:
- The Community Enhancement Program will build healthy and vibrant northern communities by supporting upgrades and repairs to vital community assets – such as recreational facilities, community centers and broadband infrastructure – that contribute to improved quality of life and support strategic economic development initiatives.
- The Cultural Supports Program will promote and showcase Northern Ontario culture, geography and talent by supporting events – such as conferences and festivals – that increase a community’s profile, and by fostering the north’s film and television industry.
- The Invest North Program will boost economic recovery and growth and attract more investment to the north by supporting business development and expansion, as well as by supporting research and commercialization of new innovative technologies.
- The People and Talent Program will attract, develop and retain a strong northern workforce by addressing the skilled labour shortage, supporting a broader range of interns and apprenticeships, and increasing opportunities for Indigenous people to gain job experience.
