ICAMP: Accelerating Innovation

On September 17, 2016 Canadore College’s Innovation Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Production, ICAMP for short, marked its third anniversary. There was a lot to celebrate. The $4,888,000 million, 10,500 square-foot facility – built with help from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation – provides small and medium-sized manufacturers with the means to conceptualize, design, prototype and improve or test new products for the marketplace before they make a significant investment. “We serve as a research and development arm for companies,” explains Evan Butler-Jones, the centre’s applied research lead. ICAMP, which has already undergone one expansion, offers SOLIDWORKS design and simulation software, industrial-scale 3D scanners and printers, CNC machines, industrial robots and a scanning electron microscope. To date, it has helped about 100 northern companies improve their competitiveness. Said Roy Dittman, president of Three H Furniture, “With ICAMP’s equipment, what used to take us six to eight weeks now takes 24 to 48 hours, which means we can get new products on the market much faster.”
