From Internship to Leadership

From Internship to Leadership

In 2006, Greg Seguin set out to pursue his dream of launching a career in mechanical engineering, never imagining that one day he would lead the multi-million-dollar company where he would intern. Only seven years later, in 2013, that’s exactly what transpired.

Lopes Limited, a family-owned custom steel fabricator and industrial, mechanical, electrical and structural steel contractor based in the Greater Sudbury community of Coniston, had applied for funding through the NOHFC’s Youth Internship and Co-op Program (this program was later replaced by the Northern Ontario Internship Program) and hired Greg through the program. Greg, a recent B.Eng. and M.A.Sc Laurentian University graduate, was eager for the chance to gain practical experience in his field. He completed his internship and accepted Lopes’ immediate offer to become a permanent employee.

Management recognized the young engineer’s potential -- not only was Greg mentored on the job, the company also invested in his continued education. He gained experience under a Lopes engineer, earned his Professional Engineer designation, and later an MBA from the Ivey Business School at Western University.

Today, as General Manager of Lopes Limited, Greg leads a team of 180 employees. “I am forever grateful to both Lopes and the NOHFC for investing in young talent and creating opportunities for Northern Ontario companies to thrive and grow.”
