A growing business

Co-opérative Régionale de Nipissing Sudbury is a going concern. Formed 65 years ago by a group of small co-operatives, today it has close to 4,000 member-owners all across Northern Ontario. Among the many services it provides is grain storage. With grain production increasing every year, in 2014, Co-opérative Régionale found itself needing more storage at its Verner elevator complex. “The complex had been operating at close to capacity for several years and the lack of additional space was making it difficult for our members to bring more land into production,” explains general manager Raymond Savage. With help from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation, Co-opérative Régionale added three new bins in August 2015, doubling its storage capacity. “Without the NOHFC funding, we wouldn’t have had a place to store our member’s grain,” says Savage. A year after the new bins went into service, the complex is operating at nearly 80 per cent. “We’re thinking we’re going to have to make another application soon to the NOHFC!”
